Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy presents with excessive
drowsiness during the day with a tendency to sleep at inappropriate times.
A cure for narcolepsy has not yet been found,
but most people with this disorder can lead nearly normal lives if the
condition is properly treated.
Symptoms include:
-
Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS): People
with narcolepsy may become drowsy or feel foggy at very unusual times.
-
Cataplexy: These are attacks of sudden and brief
loss of muscle tone usually triggered by strong emotion, such as
laughter, anger or surprise.
-
Sleep Paralysis: A feeling of being paralyzed that
occurs when a person is falling asleep or waking up..
-
Hypnagogic Hallucinations: Vivid dreamlike
experiences when a person is falling asleep.
-
Automatic Behaviors: These are routine tasks
performed by a person not consciously.
-
Disturbed Nighttime Sleep: A person who has trouble
staying awake during the day may also have trouble staying asleep at
night. Paradoxically, these people who are sleepy during the day may also
have difficulty sleeping at night.
